About Dr. Tolar
Dr. Tolar is a Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist who specializes in Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Named a U.S. News & World Report 2012 Top Doctor, he is a world renown expert in treating children with lethal diseases—cancer, inborn errors of metabolism, and other devastating genetic disorders through the use of stem cells.
Some patients that he sees are battling leukemia and other childhood cancers, Hurler syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy, Fanconi anemia, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), dyskeratosis congenita, and severe aplastic anemia.
Honored by the Nobel Assembly
Among his many accolades, Dr. Tolar recently received a high honor when he was invited to speak at the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Instituet in Sweden.
The Nobel Assembly is designed to give Nobel Committee members the opportunity to learn more about topics they believe will be transformative in the coming decade. Read the full article here.
About his pioneering treatment for EB
Dr. Tolar and his colleagues are pioneering a treatment for EB, a devastating skin disorder, by attempting to repair the genes of children with EB and give them back cells that can produce missing proteins, hold their skin together, and help them heal all the wounds: outside, inside, and emotional. They are at a critical juncture, where the cost of not moving forward is not acceptable. Presently, they have a treatment, but not a cure-the ultimate goal.
