Congratulations Butterfly Award winners

Children’s Cancer Research Fund honored four individuals and organizations with its Butterfly Award presented at the 2010 Partnership Summit, held on October 14.

The Butterfly Awards are given annually in recognition of significant volunteer service and commitment to the organization. Nominees exhibit consistent service, interest and enthusiasm for the goals of the organization, as well as personal dedication to our events and programs. The award epitomizes the strength of our volunteers’ leadership and their outstanding contributions.

Medical Category

The medical category, which recognizes members of the medical community at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital and Masonic Cancer Center who have shown exceptional levels of service—was awarded to Janet Hegland, program director of pediatric division of hematology-oncology/blood and marrow transplantation.

In her role, Janet plays a critical role as an interface between research, patient care and Children’s Cancer Research Fund. She provides financial oversight of the organization’s six strategic research areas, gives regular research project updates, and much more – all of which helps Children’s Cancer Research Fund communicate the impact of its funding to donors and stakeholders.

Corporate Category

The corporate category, which acknowledges organizations/ companies that have generously supported Children’s Cancer Research Fund through signature event sponsorships and financial and/or in-kind donations —was awarded to Martin Bastian.

Martin Bastian has been a partner of Children’s Cancer Research Fund for 11 years, providing exceptional production and event management for the annual Dawn of a Dream gala. In total, Martin Bastian has donated millions of dollars in first-class in-kind services, from creative planning to technical production, video editing to stage management.

Volunteer Category

The volunteer category, which acknowledges members of the community who have given significant time and/or services to Children’s Cancer Research Fund through event or program participation, public speaking or publicity, administrative duties, and other such efforts— was awarded to Tony and Heidi Giuliani.

Tony and Heidi have three years of amazing participation and leadership as captains of Team Drew for the Time to Fly walk/run event, honoring their son Drew, a retinoblastoma survivor who is currently in remission for the fifth time. In 2010, Heidi and Tony rallied nearly 100 people to join and fundraise on their team this year, and raised nearly $15,000, in addition to recruiting volunteers and participants from their respective workplaces.

Care Partners Category

The Care Partners category, which recognizes the Care Partners volunteer who has given a significant number of service hours to patients and their families—was awarded to Nance Alexander. The Care Partners volunteer program provides non-medical support to the families of pediatric cancer and bone marrow transplant patients.

As a Care Partners volunteer, Nance helps families through a difficult time in their lives by providing extra support. She often coordinates transportation needs of family and friends arriving at the airport, providing rides to clinic appointments, running errands, grocery shopping, cleaning or sitting with a family during lengthy doctor’s appointments. She has been a true lifeline to these families as they spend months far away from home.
