Donate Electronics

Our Upcycle Electronics Program turns retired electronics, otherwise known as electronic waste (e-Waste), into charitable giving that will be applied to your Time to Fly fundraising goal! E-Waste is a global epidemic and contains cancer causing toxins that are polluting the environment and our health.  By collecting and Upcycling retired cellphones, laptops, tablets and other mobile devices (see full product list), we will help eliminate e-Waste while creating funds to support Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

Help reach your fundraising goals by asking your friends, family and colleagues to donate their smartphones, laptops, iPads, iPods, video games, camcorders and more. It is as simple as asking them to print a free shipping label, enter your team and/or individual name and send it in via UPS. Items must be post marked by May 8, 2015 to be included in totals for event day recognition.

Fundraising Tips

We want to make sure you have a great event experience and have the tools to help you reach your fundraising goals for Time to Fly. We’ve gathered resources and suggestions from past participants to ensure that you make the most of Time to Fly.

How to Ask for Donations

5 Easy Steps to Making the Ask:

  • Identify the need you are trying to address (Raising money for leading-edge research in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of childhood cancers)
  • Explain why it is important to you
  • Share what you are doing about it (Participating in Time to Fly, fundraising goal, etc.)
  • Ask your donor to take a specific action (Donate X amount and/or join your team)
  • Stop talking

Common Pitfalls:

  • Some people will say no – Don’t worry, they are not rejecting you
  • Don’t make assumptions on who will donate, how much they will give or their personal connection to the cause
  • Don’t talk yourself out of a donation by saying less is ok

Following up:

  • Be sure to follow up – Lack of response doesn’t necessarily mean unwillingness to give
  • Updating people on how your fundraising is going allows you to ask again in a different way
  • Set a deadline
  • Say “thank you” to those that donate, then thank them again

Fundraising ideas

Below are some fundraising ideas we collected from past participants and team captains. Use these ideas as a jumping off point. Get creative and have fun with your fundraising!

  • Set a goal. Let people know how much you want to raise and keep them posted on your progress.
  • Use social networking. Post messages on Facebook, Twitter and CaringBridge with a link to donate. Some teams even set up their own Facebook team page to share event information and progress.
  • Participant Center. Be sure to use your participant center as a resource and to send e-mails to friends, family and co-workers.
  • Offer a team incentive. Team captains can encourage a little team competition by offering a prize for top fundraisers on the team. Get creative! Maybe the prize is hosting a backyard BBQ at your house for the top 5 fundraisers, babysitting, a special outing with the cancer survivor you’re participating in honor of, lending your expertise or professional services.
  • Offer options. If you have family or friends who are not comfortable using an online donation site, offer the alternative of them mailing their donation to you or to CCRF with your name in the check memo line or an enclosed note so CCRF knows who the donation is supporting.
  • Make a silly or special trophy that is passed around to top fundraiser each year.
  • Encourage vendors and clients to sponsor your participation.
  • Host a garage sale and invite your co-workers, family and friends to donate items or baked goods to sell.
  • Place a large spare change jar at the front desk or other central location to demonstrate how “a little at a time” adds up. Decorate it with inspirational quotes and photos. Empty it every few weeks.
  • Ask 10 friends for $10 each.
  • Challenge other families, companies or internal departments to a fundraising competition.
  • Ask your favorite hairdresser/waiter/waitress/bartender at your usual hangout to donate a day’s tips. And make sure you tell friends and family to visit that day.

Event Day tips

Here are some event day tips from our veteran participants to help make your event day the best it can be!

  • You may have to park a good distance from registration or park in a remote lot and take the shuttle so make sure you allow enough time to get there and checked in before your race.
  • Bring lawn chairs.
  • Pop-up tents offer nice shade on hot days and a little protection if it rains.

Meet Our Teams

Each of us has a story. We all want a cure.

Over the course of the next 10 weeks, we’ll be highlighting 10 Time to Fly teams who represent the many people affected by childhood cancer. These ten teams include childhood cancer survivors, nurses who care for children with cancer, scientists who work in research labs, and families who have lost children. Like all of our Time to Fly teams, they are passionately committed to finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Your Donation At Work

A cure for cancer begins with a researcher’s bold idea. Children’s Cancer Research Fund is the champion for bold research that leads to life-saving cures for childhood cancer and other deadly diseases that affect children.

Our unique entrepreneurial approach turns every dollar invested into $15 to $20 in additional national funding, by backing a research team world renowned for innovative approaches. Together, we are changing the way childhood cancer is treated worldwide.

Our partners – researchers and doctors at the University of Minnesota – are not only aggressively developing research aimed at understanding the causes of childhood cancer and developing novel ways to treat it, but are delivering exceptional care to young patients.

Through our investment in cures, we’re making big strides for children with cancer. Here are some of the recent discoveries donations to Children’s Cancer Research Fund made possible:

  • A brain tumor vaccine was recently opened to pediatric patients as part of a clinical trial to curb the deadliest form of childhood cancer.
  • Discovered that leukemia patients receiving two units, vs. the previous standard of one unit, of umbilical cord blood in a bone marrow transplant were less likely to relapse.
  • Found that childhood cancer survivors are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease and need diligent monitoring of their heart health.
  • Delivered more than 5,000 hours of quality-of-life support to patients and their families through our Care Partners program.
Why should you join us at Time to Fly?

Because… a child should never have to spend part of his/her childhood fighting cancer in a hospital, instead of on the playground with friends.

Because… when other doctors say, “There’s nothing else we can do.”, our doctors say, “We have an idea.”

Because… the ONLY way we will find a cure for childhood cancer is through research. Period.

Because… the discoveries that Children’s Cancer Research Fund makes possible, have an impact not only on the treatment of childhood cancers, but also on adult cancers, genetic diseases, diabetes and even heart disease.

Because… without a community of committed champions – like our Time to Fly participants – new discoveries that save young lives would simply not be possible.

Learn more about our investment in cures at ChildrensCancer.org.
